CHAPTER 33

Raspberry Jam received a last-minute request to fill in for another band on Friday night at the Bleecker Club in the Village. Congratulations went around their table as the group’s members took a break after their opening set.

Justin sat opposite David and Lila; Lila’s arm was around David. Justin stopped chewing on a pretzel and his eyes widened. He looked over David’s shoulder.

“Hi Kristen,” Justin said.

“Hello, Justin.”

David didn’t move a muscle.

“Justin is much more polite than you, David. Aren’t you going to say hello to me?” Kristen said.

“Hi, Kristen.”

“Since you’re not introducing me, I’ll introduce myself. I’m Kristen,” she said, extending her hand to Lila.

“I’m Lila,” she replied, reluctantly taking Kristen’s hand.

“I’m David’s girlfriend,” Kristen said to Lila. “The older one he’s been living with for three years. You must be the other girlfriend. The new younger one.”

“I… uh… don’t know what to say,” Lila replied.

Brian and Gregg turned away toward the stage. Justin looked down and stared at the table.

Kristen pulled up a chair from the next table, sat between Lila and David, then turned to him.

“I’m giving you this key,” she told him, stuffing it in his hand. “It will enable you to get into locker 976 at Weyerhauser Storage Facility where I had all your personal belongings delivered,” Kristen said. She stopped to look at David. “It will cost you a couple hundred dollars to get it over to wherever you go, so here’s a $250 prepaid Visa card to cover that. I paid your basic cell phone charge for one month. Kristen looked David square in the eyes. “The lock on my apartment door has been changed. You can’t come back there tonight, or ever. I’ve booked and prepaid a room for two nights at the Holiday Inn; here’s the key, room 314. After that, I guess you can live with Lila.”

David said nothing, and turned away.

Turning to Lila, Kristen said, “He requires a weekly monetary allowance for his personal needs, and don’t bother requesting any assistance with the bills.”

“Enough!” David said.

Justin held his head in both his hands. Brian turned his chair to face away from the table. Gregg walked away.

“One last thing,” Kristen said. “There was a bag of funny-looking vegetation among your things. I didn’t want to be involved in transporting it, so I tossed it down the sewer.” Kristen turned and walked out the door.
